The largest Glenfiddich collection in the world?

By Ludo

The largest Glenfiddich collection in the world?

Hans-Henrik, who owns Hotel Falster in Denmark, has been collecting Glenfiddich items since September 2000.

In only six years, Hans-Henrik has gathered an amazing 350 different Glenfiddich bottles! His collection also includes over 100 miniatures and other promotional items dating as far back as 1924.

Hans-Henrik fell in love with Glenfiddich when he visited our distillery in Dufftown in 2000. It is also when he bought his first bottle – a Glenfiddich Vintage Reserve. Back home in Denmark, Hans-Henrik couldn’t bring himself to open it so he went and bought a second one and this is how it started…

Six years later, Hans-Henrik is the proud owner of 2 bottles of the world’s oldest Single Malt – Glenfiddich 1937. However, his most precious bottle remains a 1955 Private Vintage which we bottled exclusively for him earlier this year.

As far as we know, Hans-Henrik has the largest Glenfiddich collection in the world.

My name is Oswaldo and I am writing from São Paulo – Brazil. I have a bottle of Glenfiddich 8 years pure malt whisky. I don’t know the exact year. It is a round green bottle. It has a black and gold embossed cap with parchment style label. There is a number label on the basis of bottle (3830). G’day Hans

A different Kenny here. Admire your collection.
I remember coming across 2 bottles of glenfiddich which states first distillation, christmas day 1887. Is there such a bottle? any photos of it to recollect the image?
    Thanks.

    Cheers,
    Kenny

    HI Kenny

The decanter sells for around 175-225 euros at auctions, you can see some results at http://www.whiskyauction.com/

Regarding the 4 miniatures, if you are lucky 20-30 euros…

    Kind regards

    Sorry for returning so late…

John.. any chance that you can provide a picture of the bottle, I think I know which bottle it is, but to be 100% sure it would be good with the picture… if it’s the one I’m thinking of, it’s from the mid 70s and was sold a couple of weeks back for 134 euros.

Honoré Edmond… you can try http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com or the auctionsite http://www.whiskyauction.com/
or contact me direct at Hans-Henrik@hotel-falster.dk I might have something for you too.

    Happy Holidays Hans-Henrik

  8. Comment by John Bassindale

    Hi Hans,
Your collection is very interesting. I own a 40fluid ounce bottle of “over 8years” Glenfiddich pure malt. It is a round green bottle produced by the fourth generation of an independant family company.(Modern bottles say fifth genneration) It has a black and gold embossed cap with parchment style label. 86%US proof. Can you tell me anything about it? ie when it was made, and value. Many thanks
    Regards John.

    Hi Charlene

If I’m right your bottle is a ceramic decanter, one of three green versions I know of, there are also a black and a dark blue one. I’m not sure about the correct age maybe Ian or Ludo knows but I can tell you a little about the value… You might still find one at a specialist shop for around 80-95 GBP, you can also find the decanter at online auctions, where they normaly close with a price around 40-60 GBP.

Hope it helped you a little.

    Regards

    Hans-Henrik

    thank you

    Hi K.S. Henderson

I’m not sure where you are living but the 8064/2 is a US version of the label. You are mostly right about the age, but it closer to 15 and maybe even a little younger, since the ones 20 years ago, was an older label version, with raised types.. Regarding the price I can tell you that I got mine a few years back for about 30 GBP and that is probably also the price now… Hope that wasn’t too disappointing.

    Kind regards

    Hans-Henrik

  12. Comment by K.S. Henderson

I have found in my husbands old stuff an unopened bottle of “Special Reserve Single Malt Glenfiddich”. The number on the lower left of the label is #8064/2, 750 ml. It is in the original green, pictured tin container manufactured by Barringer Wallis and Manner.

I know it had been with him at least 15 years and probably more like 20 years or so.
He was a Scotch man and Scottsman.

I am looking to find out its value and possibly sell it to a true collector or individual that would appreciate it. I can provide photos.

Please let me know if there is any interest.
    Thank you, K.S. Henderson

    Hi Lisa

Missed your question, sorry.. 7062 is bottled early to mid 80ties. I have one with the number 7053 saying 1981 on the back label. The value isn’t that high probably 50-60 GBP.

    Regards

    Hans-Henrik

  18. Comment by Ludo

    Hi Bob,
Bottles of whisky are generally sealed so the outside environment should only affect the packaging (which may deteriorate if the air is too humid).
My only piece of advice would be to make sure the cork remains moist, especially if your bottles were filled more than 20 years ago. Obviously you should also not keep your bottles in direct sun light.
Finally, whisky, unlike wine, does not change once bottled.
    Hope this helps.
    Ludo

  19. Comment by Bob

Trying to get info on storage temperature, and shelf life. Building a wine cellar with temperature control and wonder if hard liquor can be stored here as well.

I assume upright storage is best, and if still sealed 15 year old or 50 year old is still the same acholol content.

Your replys will be very helpful.

    Hi Pat and Mary

Sorry for the delay, have missed your question and just found it today. I have seen quite a number of these and the prices haven’t been that high. I paid about 28 GBP for mine three years ago, but I think the price today would be around 40 GBP.
So maybe if the bottle doesn’t mean too much for you it’s better to drink it and compare it with the present 12 years. I think you will find quite some differences

    Kind regards
    Hans-Henrik

Hi Hans We’ve got a bottle of Glenfiddich, pure malt whisky. We don’t know the exact year,as it doesn’t have an age statement. We know it’s between 1972/1974. The 4 digit number on the left hand side of the front label is 7054, with another 4 digit number at the bottom of the bottle which is 4517.The question is, is this a collector’s item, and to what value. look forward to your reply. kind regards pat & mary

I have a bottle of Glenfiddich Pure Malt Scotch Whisky in a round bottle with a label on the back with states

“We regret that we are not able to let you have your Glenfiddich Pure Malt Scotch Whisky in our famous triangular bottle. This is because of the national bottle shortage and also because of the outstanding demand for Glenfiddich Scotch Whisky this year. Therefore as a temporary measure we ask you to accept this round bottle with our apologies.”

The year of manufacture was 1974

    Thanks Hans!
Really appreciate your offer. How many Glenfiddich Vintage/Private Reserves you have in your collection?

  34. Comment by Carsten

This ís a fantastic blog! I have known H-H since my early school days and he has always been a collector! Firstly, he earned the largest collection of lousy marks ever seen in high school, then the biggest monthly average loss in poker followed by the most amazing collection of females… But: to those of you who have not yet visited the dungeon: he has improved both in taste and in collections… H-H also himself built the most romantic Japanese garden behind the huose; and Yes, the whisky’s are both breath-taking and headache-eliciting.

    Hi Ross

If you are interested I might be able to help you here in Europe occasionally. You can contact me direct if you like at hans-henrik@hotel-falster.dk

Regarding collectors, here in Denmark there isn’t that many too, most enjoy drinking instead, but I guess that’s the reason why it was distilled in the beginning;-)

    Cheers

    My god Hans Henrik
    This is impressive!
I’m so jealous! I started to collect Glenfiddich in 2005 but it is so difficult for me to do so.Here in South Africa we have very limited choice.
I have managed to get some from Europe but not many. We don’t have many collectors in South Africa either. Keep up the good work my friend!

Thanks again for more nice words. Answer to tmz_99. Whisky is made for drinking for sure, so of course there is some drinking as well. I have tasted quite a number of the Private Vintages and the Vintage Reserves, the 1937, the 50 years and some of the 40 years too, together with most of the other editions. The one that in my oppinion was the best, was the one from 1955 I had as present in january – Serge from Whiskyfun
http://www.whiskyfun.com/archivefebruary06-1.html wrote some tasting notes that covers quite well. Check february 8th and you will find them and you can also see how it was bottled.

    Cheers

Hi Hans Henrik – It is wonderful to see some of your bottels at WWW. Some times, I saw your collection and it gets bigger from year to year. We will see us at next Wild Whisy Weekend and have a nice dram – Kind Regards from your Whisky Friend from Germany

    Dear Glenfiddich-friends,

H-H gave me the opportunity to visit his collection this spring. The photos are beautifull and nice, but the impression of the whiskybasement is simply astonishing. I yet collected some interesting bottles myself but will never even come close to the collection mentioned above. I think we all only have a chance when H-H will sell his collection someday… If one of you have some interesting bottles and H-H already has it and don’t want it, don’t hesitate to contact me, I might be interested!!

Best regards and specially for H-H, greetings from the Netherlands

    The Chief

  42. Comment by tmz_99

    Hans,
Congratulations on an amazing collection! That is really rather breathtaking.. But of course along with collecting there must be some drinking as well aye?
Nothing like drinking a bottle of something that you may only get to once.. :)

  43. Comment by Hans-Henrik

    Hi fellow whisky friends.

First of all thanks for the nice words about my collection and my person. Also thanks to Ian, Ludo, Jens and all the other nice people at Glenfiddich who have made my collection possible by helping in one way or another.

I would like to write a few comments to some of the contributions.

To Jeroen, you have to be patient a little longer to see both bottles together, the last one stills waits in US for a personal pickup so it might take some time.

To Tommy, buy some single cask bottlings, if you can afford to buy more than one of each, do it. Normaly they will raise in price when the stock is gone and will be good for a swap for the next bottles. Try and find contacts all over the world, so you can have people searching for you worldwide and treat the people like you want to to be treated yourself. Thanks to the whisky I now have really good friends in most of the world, of course most in Europe, but also in Japan, Australia and USA.

I’m allways hunting new editions I don’t have, so if any of you have something new or old please let me know. Among others I know there must be a lot of the ordinary edition without any age statement I don’t have out there. It’s quite easy to check, nearly every edition of the label have its own number with 4 or more digits, mostly situated low on the left side of the front label of the bottle.

    Kind regards
    Hans-Henrik

  44. Comment by Akim

Impressive, yes indeed. For myself as a starter I say everybody who collects when his of her collection is small or big deserve a applaus. Because it’s a sign of appriciation and love for Whisky. To Hans-Henrik I say keep up the good work

  45. Comment by Tommy Allen

Hans, is there any adivce that you would give to a young collecter looking to start out?

  46. Comment by Falk Bonitz

Amazing. This is the right word. I know Hans Henrik only from our emails, from pictures and from tales by my friend and other famous Glenfiddich Collector Wim. But I never had a chance to see his collection. Maybe this year on the WWW in his own hotel(hope I`ll have some days of holiday.
But HH always giving me tips for good and rare bottles. So my own collection is growing. But I never will reach his own.

Go on Hans Henrik and stay as you are.
